Most nights, I have an idea or a plan for a blog. Not tonight. Tonight, I just have the urge to write, but about what I dont know.
Frankly, I was surprised by the strange and twisted debate brought up by "Milk and Melamine". It looks like there some opinions out there, I am glad they found a place to be heard.
Even I have some opinions of my own. The first of which is something like this: People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. We can look down at China and say--OF COURSE you shouldn't trust your milk poisoning companies--cause they only deal in profit OF COURSE the government should have been regulating and testing for Melamine GOOD THING we Americans have it civilized with our free market system that doesn't need government intervention! wait I forget about.....
700 billion buyout ...caused by...
lowered interest rates....causing....
mass influxes of cash....pitting....
wallstreet vs mainstreet...then came
mccain to the rescue....because....
congress has to fixit....otherwise...

banking meltdown....says the...
chicken little and the sky is falling news report every 10 minutes
"If China is willing to sacrifice its own children for profits, why wouldn't they do the same (or worse) to their exports?" I like this comment, but it could be easily rephrased:
"If America is will to sacrifice family mortgages for profits, why wouldn't they do the same (or worse) to international lending?" The ripple of the Wall Street implosion is spreading the world over....Notice that dollar slipping some more?
This whole Wall Street buyout to me smells something awful. But lets get a basic understanding of the facts as I have been able to deduce.
If we dont buyout Wall Street the consequences are stated by S. Pierce (an old friend):
"The alternative is the 1930's, a massive contraction of credit that sucks the growth out of the economy and causes a rapid contraction (depression). It's actually not too far away, as the system has been allowed to fester and grow unfettered due to the ridiculous mantra of "deregulation".
If the system were allowed to fail, as many are in favor of, businesses would run out of money, consumers would lose jobs, and the problem would become a feedback loop.
Even now you're seeing it. Borrowing costs for businesses have skyrocketed, because nobody wants to lend money, those costs are either passed onto consumers, or absorbed by the company through cost cutting (lost jobs). This, in turn, feeds back into the problem.
You see, this isn't as much about bailing out greedy bankers, but about propping up the system. After that's done we need to put back some of the regulations that would be prevented the problem in the first place."
Also not mentioned is that fact if we due buy out the companies, our national debt soars up another trillion dollars. And then the government has to issue more bonds---and then the dollar slips just a little bit lower still. Something has to change otherwise we will be 1:1 with the peso and the yen soon.
Once we do this, we set a precedent. Every time Wall Street is in trouble, there is going to be someone looking for the government helping hand. Government Bureaucracy will step in and issue more laws, more regulations, and more headaches. A few cycles of this, and the free market would be no more.
But then again economics is so unbelievable complex, that I cant find two experts that seem to agree in the news reports. So everything I say is probably rubbish. Have a good night.

Just for the record, I am not throwing any stones here, just stating my own opinion:)
One would think that the prophesies of the Bible were to be coming true. UH OH...she brought God into it! Don't worry, only for that split second.
I will state here and now that I am a McCain supporter, go ahead, bring it on...all the bashing of being a republican and conservative:) I can take it, just be gentle with me cuz I'm sensitive. Before my husband turned the channel from the presidential debate to UFC fighting, I was very much in agreement with McCain on how to fix this economic mess America has gotten themselves into. Ragenomics were just starting to take effect (a good effect, might I add ) before Clinton sent our jobs overseas causing the nosedive that we have been taking over the last twelve yrs. I feel bad for Bush...he came into office and all of the sudden all the crap that has happened has been blamed solely on him.. I think some give him more power than he has. Remember, the greatest thing about America is the fact that our forefathers made sure that one person could not have complete control. He has to go through congress and the senate to get things passed and we voted to put those ppl in office so our voices could be heard.
McCain is right, we need a spending freeze. I know when I have financial difficulties, I cut corners...no more eating out, driving to the cities..etc.etc.etc.
Why should the government be any different? I think the idea of going through the government officials and cleaning house and cutting wages is smart. This is better than raising taxes, yes? I do beleive there will be a time of adjustment for America, everyone is going to have to suffer a little bit.
What I think will happen is a different story. America is being sudeced by Obama and his promises (what politician doesn't promise and not give?) Is he any different? Some tend to think he is a Saint because of his golden toungue. America is in debt to China more than I care to state the amount...was it millions or billions, and Obama was talking more spending for new programs...when you are in debt, do you buy the fancy new tub or just wash in the tub that works for now. I believe that we will have global currency soon. I know you are glad to be out of america during elections and I just brought it to your page, I apologize for this. Well, that is my long winded opinion and it was even cut short due to lack of coffee in the system and a two yr old needing to take a bath. I wish I had more time to sit here but I can't. Just in case Bruce stops by and reads this.....HI SWEETIE ( waving to you ).
C. ;)
Mo the Magnificent twirls and laughs, flashing his crimson cloak to the bulls, taunting them, daring them to respond. This bull snorts and paws furiously in anticipation of the dance to come. Alas, responsibility has grabbed hold of my nose ring and is dragging me away.
Ah responsibility… and reality. See, this bull isn’t a bull at all; rather, a heifer. And the responsibility that removes me from the arena just now? Probably milking time.
If I’m lucky, I’m not part of a large factory herd. But we’re all part of some herd, aren’t we? And the milk? Tax dollars, being suckled ravenously by irresponsible, greedy bastards who were willing to “sacrifice family mortgages for profits.”
But milking the cows does not adversely affect their well being. Feed them well, and they’ll produce more milk. (Inject them with rBGH and they’ll produce even more. China’s not the only ones poisoning their milk for profits.)
No, it’s the parasites that really worry me – ticks and mosquitoes and leeches, sucking the blood of the cows. A cow can only take so much of that – no matter how well you feed it – before it becomes anemic.
The parasites? American consumers so blinded in their quest to keep up with the Joneses that they were willing to do anything to do it. They overextended themselves, gorging themselves, feeding until they could no longer fly.
This cow would like to see justice served to those parasites. I’d like to see them fall to the ground and explode, tainting the grass below my feet with the blood of the herd. Bloodied grass that I might eat and contract Mad Cow Disease from. I’d like to think the dwindling milk supply from this anemic cow could then carry Mad Cow prions to the greedy corporations slurping that milk from silver vessels as they float under golden parachutes, thus bringing this whole messy ordeal full circle.
Will justice be served? Well, I have Mad Cow. So my herdmates and I will be taken out back and shot, by order of the USDA, bailing out the industry once again for its unsanitary practices.
Reaction vs. proaction.
Reaction runs rampant in today’s society. I suppose it does have its uses: shooting me will stop the spread of this Mad Cow outbreak.
But will it prevent another epidemic in the future?
Responsibility and accountability.
The lack of both is what this boils down to.
Speaking of responsibility, remember when I said I had some to tend to? Please excuse me while I get on that. ;-)
Terry-
This rescue plan is a huge and massive bailout of the shareholders and the unsecured creditors of the financial firms (not just banks but also other non bank financial institutions); with $700 billion of taxpayer money the pockets of reckless bankers and investors have been made fatter under the fake argument that bailing out Wall Street was necessary to rescue Main Street from a severe recession. Instead, the restoration of the financial health of distressed financial firms could have been achieved with a cheaper and better use of public money.
Indeed, the plan also does not address the need to recapitalize those financial institutions that are badly undercapitalized: this could have been achieved by using some of the $700 billion to inject public funds in ways other and more effective than a purchase of toxic assets: via public injections of preferred shares into these firms; via required matching injections of Tier 1 capital by current shareholders to make sure that such shareholders take first tier loss in the presence of public recapitalization; via suspension of dividends payments; via a conversion of some of the unsecured debt into equity (a debt for equity swap). All these actions would have implied a much lower fiscal costs for the government as they would have forced the shareholders and creditors of the banks to contribute to the recapitalization of the banks. So less than $700 billion of public money could have been spent if the private shareholders and creditors had been forced to contribute to the recapitalization; and whatever the size of the public contribution were to be its distribution between purchases of bad assets and more efficient and fair forms of recapitalization (preferred shares, common shares, sub debt) should have been different. For example if the private sector had done its fair matching share only $350 billion of public money could have been used; and of this $350 billion half could have taken the form of purchase of bad assets and the other half should have taken the form of injection of public capital in these financial institutions. So instead of purchasing – most likely at an excessive price - $700 billion of toxic assets the government could have achieved the same result – or a better result of recapitalizing the banks – by spending only $175 billion in the direct purchase of toxic assets. And even after the government will waste $700 billion buying toxic assets many banks that have not yet provisioned for such losses/writedowns will be even more undercapitalized than before. So this plan does not even achieve the basic objective of recapitalizing undercapitalized banks.
Aaron
Hi C.! I typed my response in Word, pasted it in here and submitted it, and then saw that you had commented.
I agree with you.
OMG - we're both women. Young women. From a traditionally blue state. Apparently (?) not religious. AND voting Republican?!
Chicken Little, if THAT'S not a sign that the sky is falling, I don't know what is.
Hi p'fyre!!! I am sorry to say that I am neither young nor am I an Athiest. I am 31 :( sorry :) How can one debate passionatly with another if they have so much in common??? Feel free to ask Terry in an email how to get ahold of me on myspace if you wish.
To the McCain supporting response.
The golden tongue is exactly what we need right now, not some hot headed AARP card carrying dipshit who doesn't know or appreciate productive discussion. We need a diplomatic president right now who can sit with other heads of state and recruit allies. This is the number one important job of the president, and in a time like this, it's only more important.
All this rubbish McCain and Obama claim to want to implement from the spending side of things. Whatever, he is only 33% of the equation.
Anyone who can pick Palin as a running mate has clearly lost his mind.
Anonymous
"Anyone who has picked Pallin as his running mate has clearly lost his mind"....hmmmm...I wonder, is it because she is like the average person or is it because she is a woman. Why was that ok with Clinton, but not Pallin??? Have you been watching the news? Spending is not only 33% of the problem, it is THE MAIN problem today and why our economy is facing a complete depression. I myself think creating more jobs is more important, which McCain has a plan that involves not only jobs but nucluer energy. Where did Obama show any kind of a plan? Like I said, he is all talk and that's it. So if you need a "golden tongue", you won't get much else. And calling a man who is close in age to Obama a "AARP card carrying dipshit" clever...very clever debating. I can tell you are democratic, you use to much of your anger rather than your head to debate.
Who says McCain can't get allies? Being a leader is not about being EVERYONES friend. Sometimes you have to have stand up for what's right and that's not always the popular decision, but at least it's the right decision. I always felt that Clinton had the ability to stop this problem with Saddam back when he was in office, he was so concerend with making friends that he let the very problem of terrorists continue, which is why we got attacked. Obama talks of disarming America....Do you really think this is smart? Taking away the right to bear arms, that is in the Constitution, freedom is what America is all about. Obama is talking imprisonment of our rights. The very rights our fore fathers gave to us with thier lives fighting England. I don't know about you, but my husband is an avid hunter, he puts meat on the table EVERY year. Obama IS NOT supported by hunters.
This is what you will get with Obama: Talk, talk, talk, promises, promises, promises......BAM...hit's you with high taxes, takes away your right to choose your own damn doctor, MAKES you take government insurance, raises prices of bullets to where no one can afford to hunt and provide meat for thier families, spends more money that we don't have, we pay for it cuz our taxes get raised again...on and on and on....etc. etc. etc.
Please rebuttle this with some information that can be backed up with some kind of plan that he has created. Or..better yet...rebuttle it with why you even think this is the kind of country you want to live in ?? Why? Why would you want your freedom imprisoned like that?? Obama made it VERY clear that is his plan. It doesn't make sense that anyone could get ppl to vote for them unless thier ability to decieve and fancy talk can hypnotize ppl into thinking he is SOOOOO great.
I look forward to hearing from you...but please remember, debating is not about name calling and slandering...it is about facts and beliefs.
C.
Dear C and P-yew(he he he),
A few comments of my own. I will try to be brief and organized.
On Palin:
Charismatic, likable, and probably very adept in politics. I mean she ran against the INCUMBENT REPUBLICAN candidate in Alaska...and beat him. Thats balls! But come on, its Alaska! The toughest part of being Governor there is how to give out all that oil revenue. 85% of Alaskans tax revenue comes from oil alone--and when your job is dividing money like that, its easy to have an 80% approval rating. She is just not presidential material...and as an Independent party guy that thinks both parties should be voted out of office, this makes a big difference with me. Even conservatives in her own party are asking her to step down. Not a good sign.
Then you have the actuarial tables of a 72 yr presidential candidate who has gone through 3 bouts of cancer and with significant war injuries? You have to consider the VP very carefully. There was probably 100 more women smarter and more politically astute then Palin (but without the looks and charisma she has--she is kinda hot in a girl next door kinda of way). And as they say, Power is a hell of an aphrodisiac.
On the UFC:
I laughed like hell when C said the husband turned the channel from the debates to UFC. The irony and the similarity of UFC to presidential politics is just to great not to have a good laugh over.
Mad Cow allusion,
America has become the greatest salesman in the world. Everything is cheap, available, and disposable. This is a luxury few have. We must watch out for own gluttony--and everyone of us is guilty. How much money have I wasted on beer between my own lips? I bet enough to pay back both college loans. How many Americans have a farm with 40 acres, with useless plants and animals only for show, just for two people only? While millions are homeless? I think this could be considered a type of consumer gluttony in itself. But its what is great about America--you reap what you sow--or you just marry rich.
Financial bailout.
Hallelujah! The people have spoken and the world still hasnt crashed! 122 economists have said it isnt/wasnt needed! Go bankrupt like every other misrun business and start over and leave the real opportunities to the fresh entrepreneurs. Nuf said.
And Aaron, thanks for the clarifications but PUH-LEASE keep it laymen, that economic thesis your wrote took me about five readings to get an idea of what you said.
On spending:
Every political party spends and sends up the national debt even higher. Unavoidable. When its other people money, the temptation is just too great. But we still pay less taxes than ANY European country. Of course, they have less murders, rapes, and assaults than anything America could ever dream, but thats a whole different kit-n-kaboodle. Socialism does have its advantages.
On McCain
Great guy, but he leaves me a little perplexed. With a guy that has a service record like his, all he keeps mentioning is winning wars and returning home with glory. (at least the two speeches I heard) He of all people should know that there is little glory in any war. I AGREE with him that we need to stay in Iraq in 'til the job is finished--consequences of pulling out too soon would be catastrophic. Iran taking over is just one such scenario. And the Bush campaign leaves the Republicans slightly more distasteful then the Democrats. McCain comments dont seem very diplomatic either. "I looked into his eyes and all I could see is K-G-B" truth or not, such words could have a backlash on his 8 yrs of presidency.
On Obama and the golden tongue:
Obviously the socialism candidate, but if he could talk a little more and start a few less wars, then I'm sold. But I am probably voting Libertarian. But please tell me how I am wasting my vote.
On me:
What a great guy. And single.
Terry.......dear sweet Terry-this is to much fun. You leave me no choice but to rebuttle even though the majority of what you said I completely agree with-LMAO over here.
On Palin:
I think even though she is not politically perfect, it would be a nice change to have someone who is just as next door as you please in office. Sort of, if you will, a regular joe to balance things.
This is why I want her to stay.
On the UFC:
Always happy to give you a good laugh :) Even if it means standing on a 2x4 and jumping to get the car "unstuck" LOL...strike a memory?
Mad Cow allusion:
Nuf said, I agree....I am sick to death of kids my son's age walking around with cell phones and ipods that cost more than my bed. I am tired of ppl who wear name brands just because it's what everyone else is doing, BUT this is America. Your right about that.
Crime rate: my stance on that? Caneing (SP?) much like they have in China....harsh I know, but if it works. Funny cuz I am not much for corporal punsihment myself, only when ABSOLUTLY necessary.
Financial bailout:
huh? If it is what I think you are saying than I agree. No bailing them out, right?
On spending:
No, I stick by my guns here. McCain has plans that will cut spending in the government, which those costs saved could be used to spend on more important matters. Even if he doesn't put it towards the deficit, put it towards new goals that can help us out. I know, I know, robbing peter to pay paul...sometimes you have to.
"And the Bush campaign leaves the Republicans slightly more distasteful then the Democrats."
Why now? Because Bush is the leader who gets blamed when all goes wrong in the world, lol. I will say it again- we have a congress that is just as much responsible as he is...republicans and democratics sit in those seats.
On Obama and the golden tongue:
Any man who talks with out a plan to back him up tells me there is nothing there but empty promises.
"Pretending there is only a Republican or Democratic proposal to solve the challenges our nation faces ignores the voices of millions upon millions of Americans who are sick and tired of partisan posturing," says Bob Barr.
Smart way to vote I say !! I will not try to tell you any different...Maybe this would be the better solution to the problem anyways.
On You:
Yes Terry, you are a great guy, why the hell are you still single??
AHHH, yes, I remember now...because you are not traditional :)
I feel the deep swell of evil laughing about to burst from my lips....MMMWWWHHAHAHAH. To much fun here.
c.
Provide meat for their families? I end the discussion right there. You obviously are not a sane person. You churn your own butter? Are you the naked and barefoot half of yer god-fearin' good christian family? You must frequently make references to your Constitutional right to bare arms? You really think your hunting rights are threatened by Obama? Meat on the table? Gotta feed the kids? You sound like a house mom who listens to her husband all day then goes out spewing this rubbish without an independent thought. Really, food on the table? No wonder you like Palin.
Palin is an idiot, plain and simple. She is not Hilary, and for you to even mention that laughs at your simpleton thought process. Hmmm, both candidates have 2 X chromosomes- must be the same. Palin is not a politician. She is a house mom that woke up and accidentally found herself over her head. She is where she is cause she looks good, which she is about 10 years away from losing due to age and gravity. If she ended up President b/c McCain died in office, we would be in a world of shit.
No presidential candidate ever proposes a specific plan in debates and speeches. McCain hasn't, and I agree Obama hasn't. I don't expect that and for you to say you think less of Obama for not offering details- you obviously receive your biased, mind controlling information from Fox News. It is quite easy to pick out some drone walking around repeating some biased TV mantra. Go to each candidate's website and you will get all the details to their plans you need- most of which won't be implemented from either candidate.
http://www.barackobama.com/index.php
Does a candidate ever describe a specific plan for the issues?... of course not, Americans don't have a long enough attention span to pay attention.
Saddam was never a threat to this country to begin with, so why would Clinton waste resources to address it? There were, and still are way more dangerous and threatening areas of the world. If it is the poor Kurds and Kuwaitis that concern you, there again, genocide and baby killings are happening at a much greater pace in many areas of Africa- way worse that Iraq ever had it. The last 5 years prior to this war were some of the quieter years in Iraq. The attack had nothing to do with AMerican safety or saving the Kurds. It had everything to do with oil and evening a score with the Bush family. Both are very bad reasons for me to have a family memeber die in action.
Anonymous
Actually, I'd like to amend that previous retort. Palin has about 5 years before gravity and time takes its toll.
Sorry Anonymous...but you are an ignorant ass ! Don't come at me with insults and expect me to have an intellectual conversation when you are spewing out of your butt. Grow a pair of balls and sign with a name since you seem to like to be so rude. When you can provide a conversation that shows YOU have intelligence than I will aknowledge your meager existence.
OH, and those are the words from MY mouth, not fox's or my husbands.

AHHH now I see, the pot would be to blame for your lack of wit and intelligence. I guess this barefoot and pregnant, butter churning, gay hating, right winged christian "housewife" wouldn't have anything smarter to say than someone who sits around in his underwear looking at porn at smoking pot. LMAO at you right now.
Yeah, I am a real dope.
Anyways, I am sure by now you have quite the load of housework to do, as well as the whole "not pleasing your husband" thing.
Have a nice night.
Hmmm, let me pick a random letter, too.
~A
Whew, now I am not Anonymous anymore. I am sure you are much happier now knowing my true identity.
Oh, my. Where to start?
First off, C., if you’re going to try to tell me that 31 isn’t still young, I’m going to have to disagree or be personally insulted. I’m deferring “middle age” until at least 40.
The bailout.
Mo said, “122 economists have said it isnt/wasnt needed!”
No, that’s not what they said. What they said was as follows: (emphasis added is mine)
”As economists, we want to express to Congress our great concern for the plan proposed by Treasury Secretary Paulson to deal with the financial crisis. We are well aware of the difficulty of the current financial situation and we agree with the need for bold action to ensure that the financial system continues to function. We see three fatal pitfalls in the currently proposed plan...”
Aaron's view is that there are better, less expensive ways to tackle this issue. And that's probably very true.
I don’t agree with bailing out corporations whose greed lead to shady business practices. I don’t agree with bailing out homeowners who didn’t bother to do the math on what they could afford or read the fine print in their mortgage contracts before they signed on the dotted line. I don’t agree with bailing out investors – investing is always risky. All that said, I do believe we need to do something to stave off a financial crisis that has the potential to be beyond painful on a global scale for years to come.
Why do I say that? Walk with me for a second, please. Let’s look at the parallels between the late 1920’s and today. Here’s an excerpt from the Wiki entry for “The Great Depression in the United States.”
“Although the causes of the Great Depression are still uncertain, the basic cause was a sudden loss of confidence in the economic future. The traditional explanation is a combination of high consumer and business debt, ill-regulated markets that permitted malfeasance by banks and investors, growing wealth inequality, and natural disasters such as the Dust Bowl and 1926 Miami Hurricane creating a downward economic spiral of reduced spending and production.”
Just substitute "the Dust Bowl and 1926 Miami Hurricane" for Hurricanes Katrina and Ike, the severe drought in the south that we are still recovering from, flooding in the Mississippi river valley ruining crops this year, etc. and I think we’ve got a pretty good match.
Additionally, from the Wiki entry for "Great Depression," under "Causes" (emphasis is mine):
Monetarists, including Milton Friedman and current Federal Reserve System chairman Ben Bernanke, argue that the Great Depression was caused by monetary contraction, the consequence of poor policymaking by the American Federal Reserve System and continuous crisis in the banking system. In this view, the Federal Reserve, by not acting, allowed the money supply as measured by the M2 to shrink by one-third from 1929 to 1933. Friedman argued that the downward turn in the economy, starting with the stock market crash, would have been just another recession. The problem was that some large, public bank failures, particularly that of the Bank of the United States, produced panic and widespread runs on local banks, and that the Federal Reserve sat idly by while banks fell.
Those who do not learn from the mistakes of history are destined to repeat them.
So while I do not like it - not one bit - I think that the Fed doing nothing would be a grievous mistake. However, like the 200+ economists who signed that letter to congress, I hope that any action plan is carefully analyzed from all angles before being set in motion.
The Libertarian Party: “Smaller Government, Lower Taxes, More Freedom.” What’s not to like? Too bad the media doesn’t seem to recognize that there are more than 2 parties out there.
On “wasted” votes. I “wasted” my vote in the primaries when I knew the guy I voted for didn’t stand a chance in Hades. But I did it anyway.
Anonymous said, “…you obviously receive your biased, mind controlling information from Fox News.”
[Whispering] Pssst… I guess you haven’t heard, but the term is LIBERAL media bias…
Anonymous said, “You must frequently make references to your Constitutional right to bare arms?”
C. didn’t mention any such thing – she was talking about guns. But since you mention it, the right to bare (sic) arms is a big deal for me: they’ll have to pry my tank tops from my rigor-stiffened fingers.
“Provide meat for their families? I end the discussion right there. You obviously are not a sane person.”
Since when is feeding one’s family insane? I’d argue that the insane ones are the ones that blindly buy factory-farmed, antibiotic-laden meat at the grocery store. Her family chooses to supplement their diet with lean, healthy meat harvested in a sustainable manner.
(Hey Mo, heads up, I’m addressing you, too, now.) I guess I’m insane, too, because I actually raise quite a bit of our food right here on my “just for show” farm. An awful lot of the “useless plants” I grow are organic fruits, vegetables and hay. [Yes. Organic. Oooo...] The fruits and veggies feed us all year, because I preserve them by canning, freezing, dehydrating, etc. [Gasp! How utterly backwards of me! Toss any progress points I gained by raising organic food in the toilet.] Part of the hay crop feeds a small local beef herd, and some of that beef ends up in our freezer. [Supporting local farmers and economy – how trendy of me! Obama supports that, you know.] And some of my “useless animals” fertilize the pasture and garden and produce some rather amazing eggs. [Drat! Backwards again. PETA would never agree to this animal slavery. I suck.]
(Back to replying to A. only.) So now that you know a bit about me, I’m going to predict that you’re going to stereotype me as a dumb farmer. Well, I’d rather be a dumb farmer than a smart sheep.
