Milk and Melamine

Recently, I am fascinated by the milk scandal now happening in China. It literally speaks volumes about their business practices, government ideology, and their economic revolution.

For those who have glossed over this recent news, let me give a short run down about the controversy. In an effort to increase profits out of the very tame industry of milk farming, the milk suppliers sought a method to water down the milk, without alerting the consumers or the government. Watering down milk is an old practice, so it is commonly tested for by measuring the amount of protein in a given volume. Very normal, boring chemistry. But the suppliers to the milk companies decided to use a simple trick--add an industrial chemical called melamine to the milk to mimic the protein (seen in my picture above). Now they can sell 100 liters of milk for 200 liters, by adding some water and a pinch of powder.

Now melamine is normally used to make plastics and fertilizer. Not extremely toxic, but nothing you would want to eat either, since it can shut down the kidneys by forming kidney stones. Now what strikes me so dumbfounded is the sheer carelessness for your own people, your own children. You could not have a found a better way to poison children in the Chinese culture. China, by history, is not much of a dairy consuming society. Just look at a Chinese menu next time you stop for Sweet and sour chicken. So the majority of those affected are those ingesting milk products like baby formula. Some 13000 infants and children are now hospitalized due to stones or kidney failure so far. Then you have the sheer logistical problem of testing the mass of panicked mothers and their babies from a country with 1.3 BILLION people.

Two things are very surprising about the whole story. The government was alerted to the problem in January. It wasn't until Sept. 11 that they alerted their own public. So much for the communist society where all people are accorded the same worth and respect. The astounding fact is that not one, not two separate companies were found, but 22 Chinese milk producers were found to have this industrial poison in the milk. When 22 companies agree on the same protocols, we have a name for that in the scientific literature--STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE.

Its the whole idea of history repeating itself, like the meat packing plants described in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Run away capitalism for unheeded and growing companies. A year or two ago it was melamine in the toys and food products, before that it was formaldehyde. I just wonder....Whats next?

The American media is too busy covering the "victims" of Hurricane Ike, gas shortages/prices, the election and sweet Sarah Palin, the fiasco on Wall Street, etc. to waste air time on Chinese business ethics. And oh look! An ad for Wal-Mart during the news break... No, we've not heard much about it here. Thankfully, there's BBC and the internet.

If China is willing to sacrifice its own children for profits, why wouldn't they do the same (or worse) to their exports?

Don't forget the melamine in pet food (from Chinese wheat gluten, IIRC) that sickened and killed a lot of pets a year or so ago...

Yep, just another reason I'll continue to *try* to avoid Chinese products.

Added to my reading list: The Jungle. I'm about to finish this one: The Omnivore's Dilemma, by Michael Pollan. You might find it interesting.

The Jungle is definite read. It gave me an opening on why a socialism/capitalism balance is needed.

Truly, I can't imagine a better time to be out of America than during a election year. So much spin and garbage on the television.

I will give a search for the The Omnivore's Dilemma when I am in Boston in a few weeks.

mmmmmm.... did someone say steak, I love steak.

Sarah Palin, such a sexy little thing, and for a Republican. I think she should be a little more brazen and expose more cleavage.

Victims of hurricaine Ike... I think these people have a story to tell, no? I am sure glad my shit isn't strewn about the flatland oil fields of Texas. I am even happier I don't live in the state that produced Bush.

The fiasco on Wall Street- this is serious and deserves the attention it garners.

Terry, this election is a breath a fresh air. Obama rocks and McCain is helluva lot better than Bush- so either way we should come out ahead. The commercials aren't even all that bad. It is quite civilized so far.

I smell pretentious bullshit here.

That was an honest to goodness assessment of my feelings, no BS above, I promise.

Actually I like what you said. I just had to laugh at the Pallin comment, no insult intended to you. I agree we need to stand up and take attention to the Wall Street news and whats going on HERE in America, cuz you know, we live HERE. As for China, what's different...they have been like this for a while. When you can kill a baby at birth because it is not a boy, there is not a whole lot of morals and values that stem from thier brain cells. I am just surprised that some are taking offense to thier behavior now. P'fyre in paticular.

Good grief, OF COURSE we need to know what’s going on locally. My statement was meant to be read as a disgusted critique of mainstream American media, which is often woefully lacking global vision.

Re-reading my comments, I can see how they sound wide-eyed and soapboxy. But I assure you, there’s no pretense there.

Rest easy p'fyre, I thouroughly enjoy passionate people and differing opinions...I am always in need of a heated debate, it stirs the mind and soul and is good for the blood. No need to sound apologetic in any fashion, as people like yourself are why I enjoy intellectual conversation. I will be looking for your comments in the future and hope that we may be able to carry on conversations such as this one. I am actually hoping to know if you are female like myself....it is not often that I find women like me who can hold a conversation that goes outside of make-up and panty liners !!

LOL! Ain’t that the truth! Last time I checked, I was female. Hold on… OK, I’m back. Yep, still a girl… whew!

I agree, spirited debate is a fabulous thing. There is much to be shared, and more to be learned. I too look forward to continued conversations, but may I ask a favor? Could you please put a handle of some sort on your comments, so I might know it’s you in the future? So many here use “anonymous;” handles would help the discussion, I think.

Here’s to women whose brains ponder more than push-ups and Prada!
